How European Regulations Are Reshaping Global Compliance

European regulations are reshaping global compliance, increasingly affecting organizations far beyond the European Union. As modern business operates through interconnected networks and spans multiple jurisdictions, companies face new compliance demands, writes Jan Stappers of Mitratech. 

Stappers argues that companies must now rethink how they assess regulatory exposure. Regulations are no longer confined to the jurisdictions that create them. Instead, they extend throughout the global economy. Organizations should identify where regulatory expectations enter, such as through existing relationships with customers, suppliers, cloud providers, or other business partners. 

As organizations adopt common governance standards across global operations, regulatory requirements become embedded in contracts, procurement practices, technology standards, and supplier oversight. This operational reality extends the influence of regulations such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union Artificial Intelligence (EU AI) Act, and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) well beyond their immediate jurisdiction.

Furthermore, competing regulatory models are emerging. As these frameworks evolve simultaneously, multinational organizations face the growing challenge of managing overlapping or competing expectations affecting data governance, cybersecurity, sustainability, artificial intelligence, competition, and corporate accountability.

Regulations are rarely implemented only once. Instead, they are implemented within different functions, systems, and decisions. Stappers concludes that traditional compliance models, which evaluate regulations individually, are no longer sufficient. A single regulatory development can trigger changes across policies, controls, procurement, technology, internal audit, and business processes, creating enterprise-wide operational consequences. 

As European regulations are reshaping global compliance, organizations that respond most effectively are connecting regulatory obligations directly to their business operations. Additionally, they are encouraging collaboration across departmental functions and using AI-assisted analysis to understand regulatory impacts across jurisdictions.
