House Beats A Strategic Retreat in “The War On Christmas”

The Commission on Congressional Mailing Standards has reversed its stance, and members of the House of Representatives can now wish their constituents “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Hanukkah” this year. The old policy drew the line at “Happy Holidays.” However, sending Christmas cards or other communications solely for the purpose of expressing a holiday greeting remains verboten. House Administration Chair Candice Miller, who assumed the role in January 2013, enacted the change. Last year the policy was lambasted by Fox News host Bill O’Reilly, who included it in his annual “War on Christmas” coverage.
