Hacking Is A Tough Way To Make A Living

A recent survey by the Ponemon Institute got feedback from about 300 hackers, some active, some of them now moved on to”white hats.” Hackers, at least in this sample that mostly covered the U.S., the UK and Germany, averaged about $30K a year, and put in a lot of hours for not much return. Most of them say they seek out weak targets, and if they can’t crack a site in about a week they will look elsewhere. However, according to one security practitioner, there is a reason why this survey likely understates the money to be made by going after larger companies.
