Google Can Scan Authors’ Work Rules Appeals Court

A unanimous three-judge panel of the Second U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled On Oct. 16 that scanning copyrighted books, millions them, isn’t infringement, because Google makes such a limited sampling viewable online. ”The purpose of the copying is highly transformative, the public display of text is limited, and the revelations do not provide a significant market substitute for the protected aspects of the originals,” according to the ruling. The Author’s Guild, plaintiff in the suit, plans to appeal to the Supreme Court.
