Gathering Worldwide Resistance To U.S. Tech Giants

Most people in the U.S., including regulators, seem comfortable with the notion that a few U.S. behemoths are on their way to becoming both gatekeeper and gate in the worlds of digital commerce, news and entertainment. But in much of the rest of the world there is alarm. New York Times technology writer Farhad Manjoo looks at how European governments are attempting to push back against the dominant U.S. companies (dubbed “The Frightful Five”), primarily by invoking privacy and antitrust regulation. He sees a similar trend emerging in other parts of the world, including India, China and Brazil.
