Former Lawyers Open Bakeries, Dog-Walking Businesses In D.C.

About one-quarter of all lawyers who passed the bar in 2000 were not practicing law as of 2012, according to an American Bar Foundation survey. What are these post-law professionals doing? According to the Washington Post, D.C.-area former lawyers have gone far afield, starting bakeries, tech start-ups, grocery stores and dog-walking companies. “A lot of attorneys change careers because they want to be creative,” Casey Berman with career consultancy firm Leave Law Behind told the Post. Not that they leave law behind entirely – Yael Krigman, owner of Baked by Yael, said she uses her law background daily in negotiating contracts and leases, and reading health codes.
