Ethical Minefield For Lawyers In Legal Pot States

For lawyers in states that have legalized marijuana, assisting clients looking to lawfully consume and sell it comes with some major ethical quandaries. Though 21 states and the District of Columbia have legalized pot to some degree, and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has alerted state AGs to put their attention elsewhere than individual users, it remains illegal under federal law. Attorney Cristina Yu provides resources to help attorneys facing this bind, but warns that until federal law changes, some lawyers may be on their own.
