Ensuring Your Legal Team Meets EU AI Act Literacy Requirements
February 24, 2025

AI literacy is no longer optional. It is a legal and strategic necessity, as reported by DLA Piper on its Technology’s Leading Edge blog. With the EU AI Act AI literacy requirements now in effect, organizations must ensure their employees understand key AI concepts, opportunities, and risks to deploy and operate AI responsibly.
Under the new regulations, companies are legally required to educate their workforce about AI fundamentals, from machine learning to neural networks. Although employees at all levels should be trained to understand the key concepts, the level of training should be tailored to the employee’s role and AI’s impact on the organization. Training should also be provided on assessing AI systems and ensuring their deployment aligns with legal requirements.
Organizations must document these efforts, ensuring they can provide evidence of compliance with the act’s literacy requirements.
To build AI literacy, organizations must assess who currently uses AI, who will need to do so in the future, and the level of expertise required. This means identifying skill gaps, providing ongoing education, and ensuring new hires have the right knowledge.
Legal ops plays a crucial role in guaranteeing that AI complies with legal standards like the EU AI Act and is integrated into a broader governance framework. By committing to AI literacy, organizations can empower employees, satisfy regulatory requirements, and responsibly harness AI’s transformative power.
