Egg-less “Mayo” Gets FDA OK

Back in August the FDA sent a letter to Hampton Creek, a successful San Francisco start-up with a healthy-food mission. The letter warned the company that its vegan “Just Mayo” product was mislabeled, because mayonnaise has to contain eggs. Hampton Creek now says it has worked out an agreement with the FDA, the terms of which allow it to keep the Just Mayo name as long as the label gets a few tweaks. They include a dictionary citation for the word “Just” and a more upfront declaration that the product does not contain eggs. Unilever, the company that makes the classic Hellman’s product, briefly weighed in on the matter, as did the quasi-governmental American Egg Board, but as this AP story explains, both came out of the encounter somewhat bruised.
