Durst’s Lawyer Has History Of Tough Defendants

When Dick DeGuerin defends real estate heir Robert Durst in a murder trial this summer, it won’t be the most difficult defense the Texas attorney has taken on. He represented former Texas Congressman Tom DeLay in the wake of a campaign finance scandal, country singer Billy Jo Shaver, who shot someone in the face, and religious cult leader David Koresh who engaged in a 51-day standoff with the federal government in Waco, Texas in 1993. DeGuerin previously defended Durst in 2003, when Durst admitted to killing and dismembering his neighbor. He was acquitted in that case, but this summer will face charges in Los Angeles of murdering his friend, Susan Berman. “I’ve had a lot of hard cases. I enjoy hard cases,” DeGuerin said. “But, yes, this one is tough.”
