Cruise Industry Seeks Safety Improvements To Buoy Bottom Line

In the last few years, several cruise ship disasters have cast a shadow over the industry, and firms recently have brought in former Navy brass and begun to follow the example of the airlines in setting safety protocols. Safety reviews found, in results that mirrored the airline industry, that human error outpaced technological issue in posing the greatest risks. Efforts have included airline-type operations quality assurance and the adoption of a “no blame” reporting system, meant to encourage employees to speak out without fear of retribution when they see something amiss.
