Some options are becoming institutionalized, by law and by way of voluntary arrangements through providers, but it’s piecemeal. What’s at stake ranges from photographs to financial accounts, from email accounts to software licenses. Facebook allows the designation of a legacy contact, Google an “inactive account manager,” and there has been a smattering of state legislation addressing access to digital assets by fiduciaries. In the meantime, in the face of this unsettled landscape, there are a number of things individuals can do to address the issue.
