Class Action Objector Slapped With $10K Fine

A former lawyer who filed a class action objection for a case in which he was not a member has been fined $10,000 by a U.S. district judge. Michael Narkin is a serial class action objector, and Judge Jack Zouhary of Cleveland said Narkin’s frivolous objection “sought to extort money” from class counsel with an offer to drop his appeal of the judge’s approval of a $150 million settlement in a polyurethane foam case. The class counsel for the case filed a motion for sanctions last June which pointed out that Narkin had copied and pasted large chunks of his filings from allegations he raised in four previous class actions. “Narkin’s objections are remarkable in that they reflect a complete ignorance about (or purposeful disregard of) the most basic fats related to this action and have no foundation in the law,” class counsel wrote.
