Chief Justice Welcomes Deaf Lawyers To Supreme Court Bar

When Chief Justice John Roberts this week presided over the formal ceremony admitting attorneys into the Supreme Court Bar, he used American Sign Language. It was the first time that ASL has been used during the ceremony. Roberts was welcoming a dozen lawyers from the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Bar Association, and concluded the ceremony by signing, “Your motion is now granted.” Roberts reportedly learned the phrase specifically for the ceremony.
