CenturyLink Could Face $2.9M In Fines For 911 Drops

Utility company CenturyLink may be fined up to $2.9 million for system failures during a six-hour period when Washington state residents were unable to reach law enforcement or emergency personnel by calling 911. A state report released this week also said CenturyLink did not inform law enforcement of the problem. “Every person in Washington was affected because the ability for anyone to access 911 was almost nonexistent” between midnight and 6 a.m. on April 10, the state’s report says. CenturyLink has said the failure was caused by a third-party vendor’s faulty component.
