“Candy” Trademark Registration Backfires

King’s effort to trademark the word “candy” has ended badly for the online game developer. Other developers responded with scorn, and even started a “game jam” (a virtual gathering of game developers for the purpose of planning, designing, and creating games within a short span of time) dubbed The Candy Jam, in which the goal was to make as many games that featured “candy” in their titles as possible. Other games developed in reaction featured monstrous trademark lawyers ordering their overworked interns to file cease and desist orders willy-nilly. King has filed for abandonment of the mark.
