Canadian Judge Sacked For Comments To Rape Victim

A Canadian judge could become the first federally appointed justice to be kicked off the bench after asking a complainant at a rape trial why she didn’t keep her legs together. Justice Robin Camp later pursued in-depth education on the psychology of victims and counseling, and has offered a public apology in which he admitted he held deeply sexist notions. But the Canadian Judicial Council unanimously voted to kick Camp off the bench. “Given the seriousness of Justice Camp’s misconduct, his apologies, though sincere, do not alleviate the harm done to public confidence,” the panel wrote in a 112-page ruling. The judicial panel’s ruling must now be reviewed by a larger panel of chiefs and associate chief justices, and then would require votes by the House of Commons and the Senate.
