California’s Strict Toxic Labeling Law, Prop 65, Could Get More Strict

California’s Proposition 65, which mandates the toughest toxic labeling warnings in the country, is likely to be amended. In addition to a stronger version of the now familiar “this product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm,” the new rules would require labels to disclose the presence of certain specific substances, including lead and mercury, off an evolving list now numbering twelve. Labels would also need to provide a link to a state web site that would provide more information, and there would be special requirements for food products.
