Bullying Prevention Month Is No Joke

A comedy film that came out almost two decades ago, now considered a cult classic, is spot on when it comes to portraying workplace bullying, says Caterina Bulgarella in this post from SAI Global. Noting that October was declared Bullying Prevention Month, she uses that film and its overbearing character Bill Lumbergh to explain the dynamics of bullying in the workplace – how to spot it early and nip it in the bud, how to understand its effects, and what can be done to address it after the fact. Among her suggestions are to create multiple safe avenues for reporting, and to conduct training that sheds light “not just on the behaviors, but also on the psychological mechanisms that lead bullies, victims, and bystanders to continue a vicious cycle of negative behavior.”
