At the same time that budgets are flat or increasing modestly, the job of legal departments keeps getting bigger and more complicated, largely as the result of the flood of data now being generated through email and an ever-expanding arsenal of personal devices. For innovative law departments, this is an opportunity to become proactive and to reposition themselves as strategic business partners rather than cost centers, writes Brad Harris, vice president at  e-discovery company Zapproved. An important element of that, he says, is establishing a company-wide compliance culture, which includes strategic investment “in the front end of the preservation process – automating it, to make the process more efficient, repeatable and trackable.”
