Brightspeed Probes Alleged Cyber Incident Involving Customer Data

Brightspeed, a major U.S. fiber broadband provider, is reportedly examining allegations of a cybersecurity incident involving a large volume of residential customer data, as Sead Fadilpašić writes in Techradar Pro.

A hacking group calling itself the Crimson Collective posted messages on its Telegram account claiming that it has control over data connected to more than one million Brightspeed customers.

According to the group, the information includes names, contact details, postal addresses, account-related identifiers, payment histories, limited payment card details, and service appointment or order records. The group threatens to publish samples if it doesn’t receive a response.

Brightspeed told BleepingComputer it is reviewing the situation. “We take the security of our networks and protection of our customers’ and employees’ information seriously and are rigorous in securing our networks and monitoring threats. We are currently investigating reports of a cybersecurity event,” the company said. “As we learn more, we will keep our customers, employees and authorities informed.”

Brightspeed indicated it would notify customers, employees, and authorities as additional facts become available.

Legal teams should pay close attention to issues that arise from unconfirmed breach allegations, including response obligations, regulatory exposure, and communications risk. Counsel advising companies in similar circumstances should carefully distinguish verified facts from third-party assertions, coordinate investigative and notification strategies, and monitor evolving disclosure duties during an inquiry.
