BP Must Pay Businesses For Oil Spill Losses, Without Proof of Causation

Oil giant BP must pay businesses who claim, without providing proof, that their losses resulted from the 2010 Gulf Coast oil spill, said a divided Fifth Circuit Appeals panel. The ruling vacates an injunction that was to have put payments on hold until the issue was resolved. In the majority 2-1 ruling, Judge Leslie H. Southwick said the settlement doesn’t require claimants to submit proof their economic losses were a result of the spill, but only that they attest “under penalty of perjury” that it is the case.
