BP Appeals To Supreme Court In Oil Spill Damages Case

BP will appeal to the Supreme Court in a bid to keep from paying damages claims the company says are unrelated to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The British oil giant has already shelled out billions in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon environmental disaster, in both civil and criminal cases. However, BP now seeks to invalidate a settlement reached with area businesses, saying many seek to take advantage of the company by filing for damages unrelated to the spill. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana in January found that proof of direct causation was unnecessary.
