Bieber, Usher Miss Deadline In Major IP Case

A federal judge, frustrated by repeated delays in a lawsuit filed against pop stars Justin Bieber and Usher, refused to grant an extension before presenting expert witnesses. The $10 million trial was revived by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in June after initially being dismissed. “After listening to the [Devin ‘the Dude’ Copeland] song and the Bieber and Usher songs as wholes, we conclude that their choruses are similar enough and also significant enough that a reasonable jury could find the songs intrinsically similar.” Bieber’s lawyers filed an emergency motion to attempt to explain why they missed the deadline, and asked for relief from the “draconian” penalty.
