Berkeley’s Former Law Dean Blasts Sexual Conduct Review

A new sexual conduct review could put former UC Berkeley law school dean Sujit Choudhry’s tenure and continued employment at the school in jeopardy. Choudhry, who previously admitted he repeatedly hugged and touched his former executive assistant, took a 10 percent pay cut and attended behavioral training. But after a civil lawsuit was filed, University of California President Janet Napolitano intervened and ordered additional disciplinary actions. Choudry said in a filing last week that Napolitano’s actions destroyed his professional reputation, and violated the university’s disciplinary proceedings. “The second ‘disciplinary process’ initiated at President Napolitano’s command sends an ominous message that the retention of one’s position as an administrator or tenured faculty member is subject to the court of public opinion, not the policies and protections guaranteed to every faculty member of this institution,” Choudry wrote.
