Berated Lawyer Quits, No Unemployment

Her infraction would be hard for anyone to classify without knowing the details, but when she was dressed down for it by the managing partner, a New Jersey class action attorney quit the firm. She then applied for unemployment benefits. A state appeals court ruled that the reprimands she received, while “arguably improper and humiliating, are not so burdensome as to justify a claimant’s departure from the job.” The New Jersey Supreme Court agreed, and the decision to deny her benefits was upheld.
