Another Jurisdiction Bars Credit Checks Before Hiring

Philadelphia joins the growing list of jurisdictions that have banned the use of credit checks in making hiring decisions. A number of states, including California, New York and Illinois, have similar laws, as do New York City and Chicago. Other jurisdictions are considering it and it’s likely the trend will continue, according to Littler Mendelson attorneys Jennifer Mora, Philip Gordon and William Simmons. They advise all employers to stay abreast of developments in this rapidly evolving area of employment law. The Philadelphia statute, which goes into effect July 7, does make partial exceptions for certain categories of jobs, including those requiring bonding, certain supervisory jobs and jobs that involve significant financial responsibility.
