ALS Assocation Abandons Ice Bucket Challenge Trademark Effort

The ALS Association withdrew its application to trademark the term “ice bucket challenge.” If granted, the mark would have kept other charities from using the phrase. The group’s effort generated immediate negative reactions, as the challenge itself originated weeks before it was connected to the ALS Association. The association announced on Facebook it was withdrawing the applications, and also said it had raised more than $100 million in donations due to the ice bucket challenge.
