Supreme Court IP Decisions Roundly Critiqued By Retired Chief Judge Of Federal Circuit

Paul Michel, former Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, agreed to a series of interviews with Gene Quinn, IP attorney and host of IPWatchdog. Michel retired several years ago instead of going on senior status. When he did, Quinn says, he told Quinn that it was because he wanted to be able to speak his mind about the patent system and the courts. He now appears to be doing just that. In the first interview, he begins by taking a look at the Supreme Court’s recent decision in Alice v. CLS Bank and explains why he think it was – to paraphrase – a mess. He goes on to say he thinks the direction the Supreme Court has taken threatens job creation and U.S. global competitiveness.
