AI Vital To Cybersecurity and Cyber Criminals

Alain Bouillé, a cybersecurity expert, discussed the current and future role of artificial intelligence in the field of cybersecurity during a Cybersecurity Conference held in October, in Monaco.

As reported in DirectIndustry, he emphasized that security monitoring is where AI is most effectively used at present, but in that context, it is more like machine learning than true AI. It is vital for processing vast amounts of data, enabling early detection of potential threats, and conducting forensic investigations.

AI in cybersecurity enhances incident response and the prevention of attacks, by rapidly processing data and tracing an attack’s origin. It remains vulnerable to deception and quality issues in its learning processes, and maintaining reliability over time is a concern as more companies integrate AI into their operations. Security is vital in order to prevent vulnerabilities and malicious intent.

Bouillé says that the use of AI by attackers is a trend that needs attention. It isn’t currently possible to tell if cyberattacks targeting businesses are the result of AI or not, but the fact that attackers have always quickly exploited the latest innovations is well established. He presents an imaginary exercise in which chatGPT creates an application “brilliantly.” Then developers follow rules to ensure code security and prevent vulnerabilities. Hackers seek out those same vulnerabilities and exploit them.

“Even before the advent of AI, what characterized cybersecurity was the massive volume of data to be processed,” says Bouillé. Upstream analysis to detect attackers, monitoring online activities, and security monitoring all result in a gigantic amount of data, which makes AI indispensable.
