A Vote To Unionize At Al Jazeera

The staff in the digital newsroom of Al Jazeera America has voted to unionize. This is the fifth digital newsroom to launch a unionization effort this year, according to a report in The Guardian, whose U.S. editorial newsroom was one of them. Al Jazeera didn’t immediately say whether or not it intended to recognize the union, which was organized under the News Guild of New York, which is part of the Communications Workers of America. Gawker, Salon and Vice have also voted to unionize, but under the Writers Guild of America.

Al Jazeera America is latest newsroom to opt for unionization, and a major campaign is underway to organize others.
