A Scrappy GE Fights Local Property Taxes

General Electric Company, a multi-billion dollar company with more than 200 U.S. plant sites, has saved millions by contesting local property tax assessments in several states, the Boston Globe reports. GE is said to have a large internal staff of tax experts, but also to retain tax-abatement specialist law firms (including one with the web address “taxappeal.com.”) The company recently announced plans to move its headquarters to Boston, where it is receiving significant tax breaks, according to The Globe article. GE defends its policies, saying it is no more aggressive on this front than other big companies, and that it seeks “constructive solutions when our views on property taxes differ from those of local authorities.”
