An oil and gas engineer who helped develop the process of fracking says it results in the inadvertent release of methane, a more far more potent greenhouse gas than CO2. That fact more than negates the advantage that natural gas produced by fracking has over conventional petroleum, he says, and even using the most optimistic estimate of current methane release, when the numbers are crunched natural gas from fracking comes out even dirtier than coal.
