Understanding the distinction between legal automation and legal AI is essential, according to Relativity’s Leah Gregory. Although the two terms have been used interchangeably, they each play distinct roles in improving efficiency, optimizing legal processes, and reducing costs. 

Legal automation refers to a structured system designed to replace repetitive manual legal processes.  These systems follow predefined logic, triggering actions such as document routing, form generation, or workflow progression when specific conditions are met. Automation thrives in environments with clear inputs and predictable outcomes, enabling legal teams to scale operations, reduce manual effort, and maintain consistency.
