Understand and Optimize Legal Automation and Legal AI

Understanding the distinction between legal automation and legal AI is essential, according to Relativity’s Leah Gregory. Although the two terms have been used interchangeably, they each play distinct roles in improving efficiency, optimizing legal processes, and reducing costs.

Legal automation refers to a structured system designed to replace repetitive manual legal processes.  These systems follow predefined logic, triggering actions such as document routing, form generation, or workflow progression when specific conditions are met. Automation thrives in environments with clear inputs and predictable outcomes, enabling legal teams to scale operations, reduce manual effort, and maintain consistency. For organizations facing resource constraints, automation supports the goal of doing more with less while reinforcing compliance and operational discipline.

In contrast, legal AI operates beyond fixed rules, using machine learning and natural language processing to analyze unstructured data and generate insights. It can interpret emails, contracts, and other text-heavy materials, enabling tasks such as document review, summarization, and pattern detection. AI systems are probabilistic, meaning they rely on patterns rather than certainty, making human oversight, validation, and governance critical. AI serves as an analytical accelerator, helping teams extract meaning from complex datasets while preserving the central role of human judgment.

The distinction between these two technologies becomes especially important in high-stakes matters such as investigations and litigation, where process integrity and insight generation are critical. Automation ensures defensible, consistent workflows, while AI enhances the ability to identify relevant information and prioritize review efficiently.

Rather than treating legal automation and legal AI as competing approaches, leading strategies integrate both. Automation provides the operational foundation, and AI adds analytical depth. As legal work grows more complex, the future lies in combining structured workflows with intelligent analysis to deliver efficiency, defensibility, and informed decision making.
