Legal Ops Embraces GenAI as a Transformative Tool, Not an Upgrade

Legal Ops is embracing generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) as a transformative tool, not just a technical upgrade, according to a LexisNexis blog post. At the recent 2025 CLOC Global Institute, Lyndsey Van Benschoten, Director of Legal Operations at HCA Healthcare, explained how the organization’s legal department evaluated AI solutions.

Initially, representatives from the legal department’s teams formed a focus group that conducted trials of multiple tools tailored to the unique needs of each team. Van Benschoten’s advice was clear: Understand use cases first, then choose technology that supports them.

Along with Jeni Turner from LexisNexis, Van Benschoten explored five major AI applications: multi-jurisdictional legal research, reusing past work products, agentic AI for autonomous tasks, clause generation for contracts, and upcoming voice-activated legal assistants. Each example illustrated how AI can reduce repetitive work, improve accuracy, and save time. Particularly noteworthy was the promise of agentic AI and voice tools that could reshape how legal teams interact with technology.

The message is unmistakable: Legal ops teams that embrace genAI as a transformative tool within their departments are not only delivering significant value to the business but also enhancing their strategic position in the organization.
