Collaboration between thought leader and eDiscovery Today founder Doug Austin and the Legal Tech Media Group (LTMG) has resulted in a comprehensive infographic identifying 12 legal use cases for generative AI (GenAI). Here are descriptions of the diverse applications they identified:

  • Pleadings and Motions Drafting & Automation: GenAI can create initial drafts of pleadings and motions based on predefined templates, adjust templates based on case specifics, and ensure consistency within the document.
  • Predictive Case Analysis: GenAI models can be trained on historical case outcomes to predict potential results in similar future cases, providing insights on how to strategize or whether to settle.
  • Legal Chatbots: Generative models can power legal chatbots that provide preliminary legal advice, answer common questions, or help users navigate complex legal processes.
  • Intellectual Property (IP) Management: GenAI can organize and manage intellectual property assets, ensuring timely renewals and compliance in the domain of patents, trademarks, and copyrights,. It can also assist in drafting applications, conducting searches, or monitoring for potential infringements or opportunities for IP monetization.
  • eDiscovery and Evidence Review: GenAI can automatically identify and categorize relevant ESI across the document collection. It can aid in case understanding patterns or anomalies in the data that can lead to critical insights.

Despite these advancements, it is important to view AI as a complementary tool supplementing human expertise rather than replacing it. Responsible application of AI in law is essential, recognizing its role as a support system for lawyers and legal professionals.
