Generative AI Collaborates with Lawyers, It Doesn’t Replace Them
February 9, 2023

ChatGPT, a generative AI algorithm owned by OpenAI, has been all over the news, with examples of what it can do saturating Twitter. The benefits of using generative AI in the legal industry include increased efficiency, improved accuracy, and enhanced creativity. The best way to use it is not in setting a task and expecting a perfect result, but in actively collaborating with it. Generative AI works by inputting content, which it then learns and interacts collaboratively with you in a conversational way. As a practicing lawyer, you can harness its power by letting it help you draft contracts. It gets you started and gives you feedback along the way. Generative AI can also assist you by providing instant access to vast amounts of legal information and research, allowing you to save time by not having to sift through quantities of potentially irrelevant materials. It is not, however, a substitute for human judgment and expertise, and the technology is not a replacement for the legal professional. Lawyers must carefully review and verify any materials generated by AI to ensure they are accurate and appropriate for the specific matter at hand, and keep in mind ethical and legal considerations.
