Resignation, Recriminations. In GOP Attorneys General Group

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has resigned as chairman of the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA). Earlier, Executive Director Adam Piper resigned under pressure after the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol. Carr referenced the rally, which an arm of RAGA promoted in a robocall, when he stepped down. The robocall went out without the knowledge of Carr or other top AGs in the group, after a rancorous debate about whether it was appropriate for a group that backs law enforcement to promote a rally based on lies about the 2020 elections. Piper said he played no role in planning or sponsoring the event, but internal emails show him present at a Jan. 5 meeting in which top Trump administration officials planned the rally. Factions have formed among the 26 Republican attorneys general, and according to staffers, things have been chaotic since the rally and its aftermath. Carr was the head of one faction. The other faction is headed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who spoke at the Jan. 6 rally. Paxton, serving his second term as Texas’s AG, has been under indictment since 2015 by a Texas grand jury, and since 2016 by the Securities and Exchange Commission.
