Who Knew That Campari Owns Wild Turkey?

The Ragnar Locker ransomware gang knew. On Nov. 1 the hacksters informed the Italian spirits brand Campari that they’d encrypted its servers and were holding the data hostage for $15 million bitcoin. By way of proof they displayed a stolen contract between Wild Turkey, one of Campari’s many brands, and actor Matthew McConaughey. “We have BREACHED your security perimeter and get [sic] access to every server of the company’s network in different countries across all your international offices,” the ransom note reads. It lists the data compromised, which includes bank statements, employee PI and accounting records. According to the ransom note, absent a deal, the data will be published or sold via auction to third parties. Campari’s website has been restored. Ransomware attacks have become more frequent since the beginning of the pandemic. In July, SonicWall’s 2020 Cyber Threat Report said ransomware attacks have more than doubled over last year.
