After Partner’s Suicide, Miami Lawyer Accused Of Bilking Firm For Insurance Money

The former law partner of a prominent Miami tax attorney who committed suicide has been sued by the deceased lawyer’s firm. According to the complaint, the defendant attorney, Hal J. Webb, contrived to receive the proceeds of a “keyman” insurance policy by delaying the implementation of a beneficiary change after he had left his former law firm, which is now known as The Cantor Group Law. The firm was formerly known as Cantor & Webb. According to the complaint, Webb was aware of his former partner’s depression and that he might be contemplating suicide, understood that he would collect if he died, and “purposely delayed and avoided transferring the Keyman Policy to The Cantor Group with this morbid aspiration in mind.” The insurance carriers are also named defendants and are alleged to have failed to investigate the matter before paying the benefit to Webb.
