Robert Almodovar, convicted of a double murder in 1995 and in prison ever since, was freed when Chicago prosecutors abandoned their case in the retrial his attorneys had been demanding for more than 20 years. His conviction rested on eyewitness reports obtained by Chicago police Detective Reynaldo Guevara, now-retired, who is accused of framing 51 people on phony murder charges during his career. No physical evidence linked Almodovar to the 1994 double homicide, according to an investigation led by former U.S. Attorney Scott Lassar, who found it “more likely than not” that Almodovar was in fact innocent of the murders.
