F. Lee Bailey, OJ’s Lawyer, Disbarred and Living Above a Hair Salon

Former superstar defense attorney F. Lee Bailey is 83, broke, and unable to practice law. He first hit the headlines shortly after graduating from law school, when he convinced the Supreme Court to overturn the conviction of Sam Sheppard, a surgeon who was famously in prison for murdering his pregnant wife. Bailey went on to become notorious for the many less than savory clients he represented, but his biggest star turn came in 1995.He served on OJ Simpson’s defense team, the so-called “Dream Team,” when Simpson stood trial for the murder of his estranged wife, Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. After that trial he was the only member of the team to consistently maintain Simpson’s innocence. Florida disbarred him in 2001. Two years later Massachusetts followed suit. He passed the Maine bar exam in 2012, at the age of 79, but the State would not admit him to practice. He filed for bankruptcy last year. His friend and co-Dream Team member, Alan Dershowitz, says Bailey is suffering for Simpson’s acquittal.
