What can a company do when it gets word that an employee is angling for a new job and might be about to depart with proprietary information? It’s a difficult situation, although not as difficult as when the employee has already left and, you suspect, has already taken proprietary information out the door. This post is a primer on how to proceed in either case. It notes a technical fact of life that works in the company’s favor: Almost any type of data copying leaves a “trail of breadcrumbs” that can be picked up and followed by competent forensic investigators.
