Trump Twitter Error Spurs Trademark Scramble

In the middle of the night on May 31st, President Donald Trump tweeted: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe.” No definition for “covfefe,” or acknowledgment that the word was – most likely –  a typo followed. The post immediately went viral, inspiring dozens of memes within hours. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was subsequently flooded with more than 30 trademark applications from people looking to sell coffee, clothing, alcohol, bumper stickers, children’s’ cribs, and even investment advice using the mysterious “covfefe.” “Unfortuantely for the applicants,” Joseph Mandour, IP attorney with Mandour & Associates, APC, writes for his Trademark Registration blog, “most if not all of the applications will be rejected.”
