Normally not considered “hard labor” like construction or work on a loading dock, many nursing jobs involve repeated and unpredictable heavy lifting. Moreover, because of the current obesity epidemic, that lift is getting heavier. That result is a “scourge” of back injuries, explains this article in a Georgia health publication. According to one analysis, nursing ranks number eleven in a ranking of job categories by frequency of injury. The article notes that the federal Nurse and Health Care Worker Protection Act of 2015 is currently being reviewed, and that meanwhile a number of states have their own regulations relating to safe handling of patients.
