NY May Force Uber To Provide Tipping Options

New York officials are moving to require Uber to provide its users with in-app tipping options. The city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission announced the proposal this week, which would require any car service that accept only credit cards to allow passengers to tip their drivers. “This rule proposal will be an important first step to improve earning potential in the for-hire vehicle industry, but it is just one piece of a more comprehensive effort to improve the economic well-being of drivers,” said Meera Joshi, the city’s taxi commissioner. The move was prompted by a petition from the Independent Drivers Guild that collected more than 11,000 signatures. If New York takes this step, it could set the stage for other major cities to follow suit.
