FBI Sets Record-High $3M Bounty For Russian Cybercrook

The FBI has announced a $3 million bounty for Evgeniy M. Bogachev, the most wanted cybercriminal in the world. Bogachev has been indicted in the U.S. for creating a network of virus-infested computers to siphon hundreds of millions of dollars from bank accounts across the globe. The Obama administration announced sanctions against Bogachev and five others in December, in response to intelligence agencies’ conclusion that Russia interfered in the U.S. election. But, the New York Times reports, Bogachev’s global web of data-mined information “may have created an irresistible opportunity for espionage.” Intelligence officials told the Times that Russian authorities were essentially riding Bogachev’s coattails, scanning computers he hacked for files and emails. This explains why the 33-year-old cyberthief lives an extravagant life in a Russian resort town, driving several luxury cars, and sailing in his private yacht.
