SCOTUS Rejects Challenge To NFL Concussion Settlement

The Supreme Court will not consider a challenge filed by some retired NFL players, claiming a 2015 class action settlement between the football league and more than 20,000 retired players unfairly favored those who are currently diagnosed with illnesses. The smaller group of challenging players claim the deal “unfairly favored currently injured retirees and left thousands of former players who have not yet been diagnosed with neurological diseases without any recourse,” according to NPR’s Nina Totenberg. The Court’s move puts to rest the final legal challenge to the settlement, meaning payments to individuals can begin. The NFL may pay out up to $1 billion over 65 years to players who have suffered concussions and related injuries.
