Nation Can’t Afford For Trump To “Fail,” Says Sotomayor

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in an interview at the Hill Center on Capitol Hill this week, said, “We can’t afford for a president to fail.” Liberal commentator and talk show host Bill Press asked Sotomayor about the “800-pound gorilla in the room,” namely, the election of Donald Trump as President. Sotomayor, who was nominated by President Obama in 2009, said, “I think that this is the time where every good person has an obligation both to continue being heard and to continue doing the right thing.” Of Trump, she said, “[W]e have to support that which he does which is right and help guide him to those right decisions. But we can’t afford to despair, and we can’t afford to give up our pursuing of values that we and others have fought so hard to achieve.” She also said she was looking forward to a nomination to fill the court’s long-standing vacancy. “It’s not an ideal situation,” she said. “We function better as nine.
