Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee want the Justice Department to examine a $25,000 donation that the Donald J. Trump Foundation made to Attorney General Pam Bondi just as she was weighing whether to investigate Trump University. All of the committee’s Democrats signed a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch, saying the 2013 donation “may have influenced Mrs. Bondi’s official decision not to participate in litigation against Mr. Trump.” They asked that DOJ look into whether or not federal bribery or other laws may have been violated. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has also said that his state is looking into possible impropriety, and is “looking into the Trump Foundation to make sure it’s complying with the laws that govern charities in New York.” Aides to Trump have already said the donation was a mistake, stemming from clerical errors. And a spokesman for the Florida AG’s office told the Washington Post that at the time of the donation, there was only one consumer complaint against Trump University, and “the matter never rose to the Attorney General’s level for any decision of any kind.”
